Boeing as a whole generated $17 billion in revenue during the second quarter, up 44% from $11.8 billion in the same period of 2020. Airbus A350 freighter (28 juillet)The Airbus Board of Directors has approved the launch of an A350 freighter derivative. It will be a “light hybrid” of current models but based predominantly on the A350-1000. Its maximum payload will be more than 90 metric tons and service entry is planned for 2025. Airbus says that it is “getting “closer every day” to securing launch customers. General Dynamics aerospace results (28 juillet)Revenues of General Dynamics' aerospace businesses in the first half of 2021 were 18% down from 2020, to $1.6 billion. However, the $195 million profit was 23% more than in 2020. Gulfstream delivered 21 aircraft including 18 large-cabin and three mid-cabin during the three months ended 30 June, down from 32 in 2020. However orders have been strong and Gulfstream expects to deliver 32 aircraft in the third quarter and 37 in the fourth.General Dynamics characterized the G700 certification program as “difficult”. “Much remains to be accomplished, particularly concerning thecertification of the Rolls-Royce (Pearl 700) engine”. Britten-Norman (28 juillet)Britten-Norman has acquired a fleet of BN2T-4S Islander aircraft which hadpreviously served in the UK militaryunder the designation Defender 4000 (D4K).The aircraft, which are the higher capacity, longer endurance version of the turboprop Islander, will undergo major refurbishment and be returnedto the civil aircraft register for export sale. GE Aviation (27 juillet)GE Aviation took orders for 555 commercial engines in the second quarter, up from 74 in the same period last year. This included 438 CFM International Leap-family engines, up from just 24 in the same period of 2020. The company delivered 383 new commercial aviation engines in the second quarter, including 211 Leaps versus 362 and 178 respectively in 2020. GE Aviation expects a year-on-year production rate increase in the third quarter, but has not disclosed expected future rates, saying it is “assessing rate readiness across [the] supply chain”. Drones-Advanced Air Mobility Samad Aerospace (27 juillet)Cranfield based Samad Aerospace has completed hover tests for its second prototype eVTOL eStarling aircraft. Designed for intercity transport, the eStarling aircraft will combine VTOL capability with the speed and range of a business jet. With a semi blended wing body (BWB) design and powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), the eStarling will be the fastest (300 mph) hybrid electric eVTOLaircraft in the world with the longest range(800 miles). Spatial Inmarsat (29 juillet)Inmarsat has announced plans for “ORCHESTRA”, a communications network that will combine existing geosynchronous (GEO) satellites with low earth orbit satellites (LEO) and terrestrial 5G into an integrated, high-performance solution. The initialfive-yearinvestment isexpected to be in the order of $100m. Future plans include a LEO constellation of 150-175 satellites. Composite launcher fuel tanks (28 juillet)Under ESA's Future Launchers Preparatory Program,MT Aerospace has demonstrated a novel design of a small-scale tank made of a carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) that is both leak-proof with liquid hydrogenand compatible with liquid oxygen, without the use of a metal liner. A CFRP tank is much lighter than metal, requires fewer parts and is faster and cheaperto manufacture. Traditionally,storage of cryogenic propellants requires tanks with metallic liners to make them leak-proof, with or without a composite overwrap. Canadarm3 program (27 juillet)The government of Canada has awarded MDA a $35.3 million contract covering the preliminary and detailed design of the robotic interfaces (Phases B and C), of the GERI (Gateway External Robotics Interfaces) project. Industrie Aérospatiale Roll Royce (22 juillet) Rolls-Royce has delivered the generator for the most powerful hybrid-electric propulsion system in aerospace, to a testbed in Bristol, UK. It and related power electronics will form part of the 2.5-megawatt (MW) Power Generation System 1 (PGS1) demonstrator programme, for future regional aircraft. The generator could also be used as part of a “more-electric” system for larger aircraft or within future ground or marine applications. Airbus (21 juillet) Airbus a livré le premier A350 depuis son centre d'achèvement et de livraison de gros-porteurs (C&DC) de Tianjin dans le nord de la Chine. Embraer's commercial aircraft firm order backlog now comprises 141 E175, 3 E190, 5 E190-E2 and 157 E195-E2, a total of 306 aircraft. Airbus A220 (21 juillet) Russian carrier Azimuth is leasing six A220-300s from Air Lease and will be the first operator of the A220 in Russia. First delivery will take place in 2022. Air Lease has 50 A220-300s on order. Aeronautik (16 juillet) The Canadian government has provided $1 million as a repayable contribution from Développment économique Quebec (DEC) to A.T.L.A.S. Aéronautik (Granby) which manufactures and assembles complex components for the aeronautics industry. It will allow the company to improve its productivity thanks to its digitalization and expansion projects. TECT Aerospace (16 juillet) The Boeing Company will acquire TECT Aerospace, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in early April. It made an auction bid worth $19.84 million. TECT had originally reached an agreement with NWI Aerostructures LLC. However, Boeing provided TECT with $60 million in debtor-in-possession financing. TECT owed nearly $18.3 million to Boeing and $4.2 to Spirit AeroSystems. This led to Spirit suing TECT last summer. Pilatus PC-21 (19 juillet) The French Air Force has ordered nine Pilatus PC-21 training aircraft to add to the 17 aircraft it purchased in 2017. The PC-21s will replace twin-engine jet trainers which were previously used for pilot training. Pilatus will be a subcontractor for the supply of the PC-21s and other ground-based training systems and spare parts. GE Aviation/ US Air Force (19 juillet) GE Aviation is working with the US Air Force's Rapid Sustainment Office to supply aircraft parts manufactured using 3D printing technology. It and Textron Aviation will jointly sell and market the platform; Textron Aviation will “use its expertise and deep customer relationships to help accelerate adoption of the electrified Cessna Grand Caravan”. A retrofit of existing aircraft will also be available. DHL / Dronamics (19 juillet) DHL plans to deploy 4,000 middle-mile drones from Dronamics in Europe that can each carry up to 770 pounds for up to 1,500 miles, with the first one expected in October and the rest to follow through 2030. DHL is also using smaller drones in Germany, China and Tanzania to transport documents, pharmaceuticals and packages over shorter distances. Dronamics has also signed a partnership with Hellmann Logistics to develop a cross-border cargo delivery service. DHL and Dronamics will work together to establish the dedicated drone-delivery network. Work will start with the Orion Artemis III spacecraft, with components already in development. Innovation SPRINT Program UK (22 juillet) The SPRINT (Space Research and Innovation Network for Technology) programme has secured £2 m from the Research England Connecting Capability Fund (CCF) over a one-year period to enhance strategic knowledge exchange driving business innovation within the space sector. Universal Hydrogen (22 juillet) Icelandair has signed a letter of intent with Universal Hydrogen to examine the potential for conversion of its Dash 8 aircraft to hydrogen-electric power. Icelandair says that its short-range domestic operations are ideal for aircraft powered by alternative fuels. Availability of electricity from renewable sources is also a key enabler for a move away from jet fuel. Aurora Flight Sciences (19 juillet) Aurora Flight Sciences is researching the use of new flight control methods for electric aircraft. Instead of using ailerons, rudders, and elevators for control surfaces, the DARPA Control of Revolutionary Aircraft with Novel Effectors (CRANE) project seeks to use actuators or effectors. ******

Components and services included are sidewalls, stowages, lighting, galleys, lavatories, seating, reconfiguration engineering, certification, and installation. United Engines – Russia (15 juillet) Russia's United Engines is to develop a new turboprop engine for a 40- to 50-seat regional aircraft programme, the TVRS-44. This aircraft is under development by Ural aviation plant UZGA and is based on the Czech Aircraft Industries Let L-610. The engine will be based on the Klimov TV7-117ST-01 which is undergoing certification for the Ilyushin Il-114-300. Tekna Holding AS (14 juillet) Tekna Holding AS, Sherbrooke, has signed a ten-year master supply agreement with a Tier 1 company in the aviation, defence and space industry. The agreement will reportedly make Tekna the primary supplier of Additive Manufacturing powder for the customer and its related supply chain for materials including aluminium and titanium alloys. BAE Systems /Safran (13 juillet) FADEC Alliance, a joint venture of BAE Systems and Safran, recently delivered its 10,000th LEAP electronic engine controller (EEC) for the CFM International LEAP engine family. The LEAP EEC is part of the LEAP's full authority digital engine control (FADEC) system. Potez Aéronautique (13 juillet) Potez Aéronautique fabriquera les becs de voilure du Dassault Falcon 10X. Boeing B787 (13 juillet) Boeing has announced a significant but unspecified slowdown in the B787 production rate from five per month to address a manufacturing issue concerning the forward pressure bulkhead. It has significantly reduced the number of B787s that it expects to deliver in 2021, forecasting delivery of half of the roughly 100 787s in inventory. Boeing orders, cancellations and deliveries (13 juillet) 3 In June, Boeing received 219 orders; 200 737 MAX by United Airlines and a FedEx order for 18 B767F and one 777F. Boeing (12 juillet) BBAM Limited Partnership (BBAM) has placed a firm order for twelve 737 Boeing Converted Freighters (BCF), bringing its total orders and commitments for the model to 31. Spatial UK Space Agency (15 juillet) UK companies and research organisations can bid for funding to develop technologies or data processing capabilities to reduce the risks of collisions in space. The initiative, jointly funded by the UK Space Agency's National Space Technology (NSTP) and Space, Surveillance and Tracking (SST) programmes will enable UK companies to mature technologies and early phase concepts. Innovation SAF+ Consortium (15 juillet) Airbus and the SAF+ Consortium have signed an MoU to collaborate with Canadian industry on sustainable aviation fuel development and production in North America. Airbus will be investing through “in-kind” contributions such as technical and certification expertise, economic analysis, communications, and advocacy. Swedish hydrogen-combustion engine project (14 juillet) A SKr24 million ($2.8 million) Swedish collaborative research project led by GKN Aerospace named H2JET will explore turbofans and turboprops for single-aisle aircraft that use direct combustion of hydrogen. It will develop technical solutions for three powerplant subsystems. H2JET complements the H2GEAR project, which is focused on liquid-hydrogen propulsion for smaller aircraft using fuel cells and contributors include The Swedish Energy Agency and Swedish research institutions are also participating.

Competitive Projects Keep Rolling Our latest call for proposals (CFP#4), which focused on a number of domains including autonomous vehicles, lightweight modular armour, acoustic and visual detection, cybersecurity and data analysis, has now awarded 48 $200K contracts with innovators. On top of that 23 $1 million contracts for CFP #2 have been awarded, completing component 1B for this call. These milestones add up to IDEaS funding fast and moving science and technology through our innovation pipeline. The Pop Up City Contest Pitch Completes Round 3 The Pop Up City Contest held its Round three pitch event. Six contest teams from across Canada went head-to-head presenting their solutions that integrated water, waste and energy systems for relocatable temporary camps for troops. Over 100 DND/CAF and DRDC representatives attended the event, including other government departments. Up to three lucky winners will each receive up to $1.5M each to build a prototype of their solution. Get a flavour of the competition by watching the wrap up video, which was recently featured in Defence Team News. Winners will be announced in August 2021. DND Poised to Host Next NATO Innovation Hub Challenge in Fall 2021 After a successful Pitch Event hosted by Portugal, the torch was passed to Canada to deliver the next Innovation Challenge for the NATO Innovation Hub. IDEaS and the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) will be working together to release DND's Innovation Challenge for a Fall Pitch Event. Les Projets compétitifs se poursuivent Notre dernier appel de propositions (numéro 4) portait sur les domaines des véhicules autonomes, des blindages modulaires légers, de la détection acoustique et visuelle, la cybersécurité ainsi que l'analyse des données. Cet appel a permis d'attribuer 48 contrats de 200 000 dollars à des innovateurs. En outre, nous avons attribué 23 contrats d'un million de dollars dans le cadre du deuxième appel de propositions, ce qui complète la composante 1B de cet appel. Gr'ce à ces avancées, IDEeS finance rapidement des sciences et des technologies rapides et évolutives par le biais de notre pipeline d'innovation. L'évènement de présentation du concours Ville Éclair complète la troisième ronde Le concours Ville Éclair a tenu sa troisième ronde de présentation. Six équipes de participants ont présenté leurs solutions intégrant les systèmes de traitements d'eau, de déchets et d'énergie pour des camps temporaires plus efficace pour les troupes. Plus de 100 représentants du MDN/FAC, de RDDC, ainsi que d'autres ministères étaient présents. Jusqu'à trois heureux gagnants recevront jusqu'à 1,5 million de dollars chacun pour la construction d'un prototype de leur solution. Industrie Aérospatiale Supplier opinions on Airbus and Boeing single aisle production rates Airbus (8 juillet) Durant les six premiers mois de l'année, Airbus a livré 297 avions à 67 clients soit 100 avions de plus qu'au premier semestre 2020. Cette hausse concerne surtout les moyen-courriers avec 258 livraisons contre 170 au premier semestre de 2020. Pour les gros porteurs, les livraisons sont de 39 appareils (2 A380, 30 A350, 7 A330) contre 26 au premier semestre 2019. Au 30 juin 2021, le carnet de commandes d'Airbus est de 6 295 avions. Bell/Transport Canada (7 juillet) Transport Canada has grounded Bell 204B, 205 and 212 helicopters. Investigation of a fatal crash in Alberta last month revealed detachment of main rotor hub strap pins. Affected pins must be replaced before further flight. This Airworthiness Directive affects 200 Canadian-registered helicopters. CAE (5 juillet) CAE has completed the acquisition of L3Harris Technologies' military simulation and training assets almost doubling CAE's domestic business in the US. The $1.05 billion transaction adds Link Simulation & Training, Doss Aviation and AMI to CAE USA's portfolio. Japan F-X engine (4 juillet) Japanese media has reported that Japan and the UK are in talks concerning joint development of the engine for the F-X fighter. The media claim that Rolls-Royce will partner with Japan's IHI Corporation and that they will also offer the engine for the export market. CFM international (2 juillet) CFM International détenue à parts égales par Safran Aircraft Engines et GE fournira un total de plus de 760 réacteurs LEAP-1B à United Airlines pour sa commande de Boeing 737 MAX (150 MAX 10 et 50 Max 8) ; son choix pour la motorisation de ses A321XLR n'a pas été annoncé. Latécoere (2 juillet) Latécoère a obtenu des prêts garantis par l'Etat de 130 millions d'euros et le rééchelonnement des anciens prêts et prévoit une augmentation de capital d'un montant minimum de 162,5 millions. Latécoère a vu son chiffre d'affaires baisser de 42 % en 2020 et prévoit pour 2021, une baisse de 25 % par rapport à 2020. L'acquisition de l'activité de c'blage de Bombardier, finalisée en février, limitera la baisse du chiffre d'affaires à environ 10 %. Eaton/ Cobham Mission Systems (28 juin) Eaton has acquired Cobham Mission Systems, a manufacturer of air-to-air refueling systems, environmental systems, and actuation, primarily for defense markets. It has 2,000 employees and manufacturing facilities in the United States and United Kingdom. Défense Boeing Defense UK (8 juillet) Boeing Defense UK has received a $322 million five-year contract to maintain and support the RAF fleet of nine Poseidon P-8A maritime patrol aircraft (MPA). Reports suggest that Boeing will select CAE for the training portion of the contract. Maritime Airborne Warfare System (MAWS) (8 juillet) French media are reporting that the purchase by Germany of five P-8A Poseidon aircraft to replace its P3-A Orion fleet could cause the French government to withdraw from its participation in the Franco-German Maritime Airborne Warfare System (MAWS) program and develop a France-only solution. F-35 forecast production (7 juillet) Cormorant Mid-Life Upgrade (6 juillet) DND has stated that “Extensive discussion and planning determined that upgrading the CH-149 fully to the Norwegian variant of the AW-101 was not a cost-effective solution to effectively meet the RCAF's needs. After a year of consultation, it was determined that Leonardo couldn't do the work at a cost that would respect the project's overall budget.” It has been reported that as a result the negotiations with Leonardo have been “paused”. UK Royal Navy (5 juillet) The British Royal Navy's new autonomy and lethality accelerator ‘NavyX' is testing UAVs that can be used to locate and rescue sailors. In one trial a UAV located a dummy in the water and deployed a test package. Participants in this effort included Malloy Aeronautics, Planck Aerosystem and the Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S). Raytheon Technologies (2 juillet) Raytheon Technologies will build three NGJ advanced electronic jammers to equip U.S. Navy EA-18G Growlers under a $171.6 million contract. In the future NGJ may also be fitted to the F-35, UAVs, and other manned aircraft. Drones- Advanced Air Mobility CAE /Volocopter(8 juillet) CAE and Volocopter are partnering to develop, certify, and deploy a pilot training program to support the launch of commercial eVTOL operations in 2024. CAE will invest up to $40 million to meet Volocopter's projected demand for eVTOL pilots in the early years of operations. Volocopter will purchase a simulator from CAE for its pilot training program certification. Volocopter (8 juillet) Volocopter is close to attaining EASA's Part 21G Production Organization Approval (POA) by the acquisition of German company DG Flugzeugbau. DG Flugzeugbau has supported Volocopter by helping to construct prototypes for its VC200, 2X, VoloDrone, and VoloCity aircraft. Thales (7 juillet) Thales a développé un drone capable de voler au-delà d'un rayon d'action de 100 kilomètres à basse altitude. OneWeb (2 juillet) OneWeb has announced the successful launch of 36 more LEO satellites to cover regions north of 50 degrees Latitude including UK, Canada, Alaska and the Arctic region. OneWeb now has 254 satellites in orbit, 40% of its planned fleet of 648 satellites that will deliver high-speed, low-latency global connectivity. OneWeb intends to make global service available in 2022. Thales Alenia Space (2 juillet) Dans le cadre de la mission EnVision de l'Agence spatiale européenne (ESA) sur Vénus, Thales Alenia Space poursuivra la phase d'étude B1 de l'orbiteur. Innovation Safran (7 juillet) Safran is working with customers to test sustainable aviation fuels with plans to deploy SAF blends this year and gain 100% SAF certifications for its engines by 2023. Deutsche Aircraft (7 juillet) Germany-based startup Deutsche Aircraft and hydrogen fuel cell developer H2FLY have signed an MoU to develop and test a hydrogen fuel cell commercial regional aircraft. The first test flight of the Dornier 328 aircraft is planned for 2025. H2FLY follows an R&D project called HY4 which was led by German research agency DLR, and involve the companies Hydrogenics, Pipistrel, H2FLY, the University of Ulm and Stuttgart Airport. GHGSat (7 juillet) GHGSat has announced a research project to assess the feasibility of using its space-based methane monitoring technology to measure emissions from offshore oil and gas platforms. Chevron, Shell, and TotalEnergies are supporting the 12-month project. Bell Textron (6 juillet) Bell Textron has announced plans for a Systems Integration Lab (SIL) facility at the Bell Flight Research Center (FRC) in Arlington, TX. It will support testing and verification for the Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) and Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA). Britten Norman (5 juillet) Britten Norman is participating in two technology initiatives supported by the UK government. In “Project Fresson”, it is a member of a consortium led by Cranfield Aerospace Solutions to develop a hydrogen fuel cell powered passenger aircraft. Project HEART (Hydrogen Electric and Automated Regional Transportation) will demonstrate an autonomously-controlled and hydrogen-powered Islander aircraft on thinly-populated routes in the UK. Yamaha (4 juillet) Yamaha is entering the aviation engine market in a partnership with a Japanese manufacturer. It will modify one of its existing small engine designs for installation in a conventionally configured light aircraft prototype to be built by ShinMaywa Industries. Shell/Rolls-Royce (1 juillet) Shell and Rolls-Royce have signed an MoU to support the decarbonisation of the aviation industry. It will expand and accelerate several existing areas of cooperation between the companies. This includes Rolls-Royce's new SAFinity service, for which Shell is the exclusive SAF supplier, and demonstration of the use of 100% SAF as a full “drop-in” solution.
